A massive flood accompanied by a mudslide caused significant damage to infrastructure in Upper Mustang on Tuesday evening, sweeping away four bridges and partially damaging two others, according to the District Police Office, Mustang.
The flood, which lasted for nearly three hours, struck the Chhumjung river in Chhoser, Ward No 4 of Lo Manthang Rural Municipality, near the Nepal-China border. Police reported that one concrete motorable bridge in Chhumjung and another under-construction bridge in Samjung, Ward No 2 of Lo Manthang, sustained damage.
Additionally, the flood washed away one iron bridge and three wooden bridges in the area.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chhiring Kippa Lama said that one hotel operating in the middle of the river and two houses in Nyamdo village—approximately 400 meters from Ward No 4 of Lo Manthang—were at risk, prompting the safe relocation of residents.
Fortunately, there were no human or livestock casualties reported.
Although the water level has started to recede, security forces remain on high alert in the area. A nine-member team, including personnel from the Chhoser Area Police Office and the Armed Police Force’s Nechung base, has been deployed under the command of an assistant sub-inspector and an Armed Police Force inspector to ensure public safety.
Authorities have advised local residents to remain vigilant, as potential risks still persist despite the reduced water flow. -- RSS
