Indonesia has the potential to become the primary carbon storage destination in the Asia Pacific region, creating opportunities for renewable energy investment, an official from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Wednesday.
"Our storage potential in saline aquifers or water reservoirs reaches 572.77 gigatons. Additionally, the storage capacity in depleted oil and gas reservoirs is around 4.85 gigatons. This makes Indonesia a potential regional hub for carbon storage services," said Edi Wibowo, director of bioenergy at the Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation under the ministry, during a discussion session at the 2025 Indonesian Petroleum Association Convention and Exhibition.
Wibowo said that carbon storage would play a crucial role in decarbonizing electricity generation, transportation, and industrial sectors, aligning with Indonesia's roadmap for reducing national emissions.
He explained that Indonesia's efforts to meet its targets include optimizing renewable energy sources, implementing energy efficiency programs, and transitioning to low-carbon fuels, such as bioenergy derived from non-food waste and waste-based fuels.
"The thing is," Wibowo said, "Indonesia's new renewable energy potential exceeds 3,680 gigawatts, but only 0.3 percent has been utilized so far."
"This presents a significant opportunity for investment and development in the renewable energy sector. The government is opening doors for large-scale utilization of new renewable energy while maintaining economic and sustainability principles," Wibowo said. – Xinhua/RSS
