The Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN) is establishing a handicraft lab to test the quality of Nepali handicrafts. Pressure to establish a lab come from major importing countries that started questioning the use of hazardous elements like cadmium in the handicrafts.
FHAN has estimated the cost of the laboratory to be Rs 12 million, out of which the Federation will invest 51 per cent and the rest will be covered by the government . The lab will be located in the premises of Trade and Export Promotion Centre

“Had the government passed the budget, construction part of the laboratory would have started earlier,†said Rishi Raj Subedi, undersecretary of FHAN. According to Bikash Ratna Dhakwa, the chairman of the federation, FHAN is lobbying for the land to construct the lab. A three-member taskforce is formed for this purpose which comprises of member from the federation, department of customs and an expert.
