Targeting the Nepal Tourism Year 2011, close circuit (CC) cameras are installed in Thamel area. These cameras are fixed to control possibility of criminal activities during the tourism year, said Tejendra Nath Shrestha, Chairman, Tourism Development Board of Thamel. “The main monitor of the CC cameras will be placed in Metropolitan Police Station of Thamel,†he added.

The footage covered by these cameras can be stored for a month, say the experts. It would be easier to make the security stronger with the help of these cameras, says Heera Sunuwar, a woman police constable at the CC TV branch, Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s office, Thamel. A budget of Rs 6.1 million has been allocated by Nepal Tourism Board for this project. Additional amount equal to 15 per cent of this amount was contributed by the local people and businessmen.
