Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal has clarified that the appointment to the vacant position of Deputy Governor at Nepal Rastra Bank will be made by the new government.
In an interview with New Business Age, Minister Khanal stated that the responsibility and authority for the appointment rest with the new administration.
The issue arose following the vacancy of two Deputy Governor posts at the central bank starting Sunday, after incumbents Nilam Dhungana Timsina and Bam Bahadur Mishra completed their five-year terms. They had been appointed on March 9, 2021.
The question of whether the current caretaker government or the new government would fill the positions has been a subject of debate. This follows reports that senior leaders of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, which secured a decisive victory in the recent elections, have been pressuring the current government to refrain from making new appointments and other consequential decisions.
However, Minister Khanal mentioned that he was unaware of such pressure. He had earlier indicated that his role had effectively concluded before the elections.
