Nearly 60 percent of registered voters cast their ballots nationwide in the House of Representatives election on Thursday, March 5, the Election Commission (EC) said, citing preliminary figures.

Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, speaking at a press conference at 6:15 p.m., said the collection of detailed voting data was still underway.

Voting began at 7 a.m. and continued until 5 p.m., though voters who arrived at polling centres before the deadline were still casting their ballots at some locations, Bhandari added.

The 275-member Lower House of the Federal Parliament election proceeded largely peacefully, with only a few minor incidents reported, added Bhandri, citing preliminary reports from national and international observers.

Of the total seats, 165 are elected under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, and 110 under the proportional representation system.

Ballot boxes from 15 rural districts will be transported to counting centres via helicopters. The EC aims to complete deliveries in Taplejung, Rasuwa, Dolakha, Bajhang, and Rukum (East) on Thursday, and in Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Gorkha, Rukum (West), Manang, Bajura, and Humla by Friday morning.

There were 18,903,689 eligible voters in this election, including 915,119 first-time voters.

Counting in many constituencies is expected to begin late Thursday.
