Three people, including a Nepali citizen, were killed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after Iranian drone and missile strikes, the UAE Ministry of Defence said on Sunday evening, March 1. The other two victims were from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

According to the ministry, UAE air force and air defence units have dealt with 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles, and 541 Iranian drones since the attacks began. Despite the country’s defence systems neutralising most threats, 35 drones fell within UAE territory, causing material damage. Of these, 21 struck civilian areas, resulting in casualties.

“A total of 541 Iranian drones were detected, of which 506 were intercepted and destroyed, while 35 fell within the country, causing material damage,” said the ministry’s post on social media platform X. “The incidents resulted in three fatalities of Pakistani, Nepali and Bangladeshi nationalities, and 58 minor injuries among Emirati, Egyptian, Ethiopian, Filipino, Pakistani, Iranian, Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Azerbaijani, Yemeni, Ugandan, Eritrean, Lebanese and Afghan nationals.”

Debris from intercepted missiles and drones also caused minor to moderate damage to civilian properties across the UAE.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported at 14:20 GMT that the wider conflict had caused many deaths and injuries across the region. In Iran, at least 201 people have been killed and 747 injured in attacks. In Israel, nine people have died and 121 have been hurt. In the UAE, three people were killed and 58 were injured. In Iraq, two people died and five were hurt, and in Kuwait one person was killed and 32 were injured. Other countries also reported injuries: 16 in Qatar, five in Oman, and four in Bahrain

The strikes follow a joint Israeli–US attack on Iran on Saturday which killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The semi-official Fars News Agency cited unidentified sources confirming that Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, a grandchild, and daughter-in-law were among the dead. Iranian state media reported the deaths early Sunday.

Meanwhile, the US military reported that three of its service members were killed and five seriously wounded as part of the operation.
