Marking the beginning of Fagu Purnima, or the Holi festival, the 'Chir' — a tall wooden pole adorned with colourful flags — was installed at Basantapur, Kathmandu on Tuesday morning, February 24.
It was raised at 7:13 a.m., an astrologically auspicious moment, following centuries-old tradition. Soon after the installation, Gurju Paltan fired a ceremonial gun salute, adding to the festive atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike marked the occasion by smearing colours on one another.
The festival of colours will be celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley and the hill districts next Monday, March 2. The Tarai–Madhes region will observe Holi a day later on March 3.
