Tribhuvan University has begun decentralising its examination system, which until now had been centrally managed by the Office of the Controller of Examinations in Balkhu since the university’s establishment.

Students had long demanded the right to take examinations from their respective regions. The move follows a recent protest by the university’s Free Students’ Union at the examination office, after which an agreement was reached with the administration.

As part of the decentralisation process, the university has decided to allow students to sit for the three-year bachelor’s level chance examinations from their respective provinces starting today (February 8), instead of travelling to Kathmandu. The examinations were initially scheduled to begin in Kathmandu on February 1.

Issuing a public notice, the university stated that, considering the inconvenience and financial burden on students, the examinations would now be conducted under regional examination control offices, with at least one examination centre in each province.

Students from the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Management, and the Institute of Science and Technology will be eligible to appear in partial or chance examinations under the revised arrangement.

“We have taken this step as part of a gradual decentralisation of the examination system,” said Examination Controller Laxman Poudel, adding that other examinations would also be conducted from provincial centres as far as possible. -- RSS
