Five Marwari Candidates in HoR Race from Morang

Five candidates from the Marwari community are contesting the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) elections from Morang district.

The Marwari community is widely recognised for its entrepreneurial spirit and strong trading and business acumen, with many of Nepal’s most influential business groups belonging to the community.

The CPN-UML has fielded two candidates under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system: Dilip Agrawal from Morang–2 and Manoj Agrawal from Morang–5.

Dilip Agrawal is contesting the parliamentary election after resigning as mayor of Rangeli Municipality. He was first elected mayor from the then CPN (Maoist Centre) and later from the CPN-UML.

In Morang–5, the Nepali Congress has nominated Phul Kumar Lalwani.

The Shram Sanskriti Party, led by Harka Raj Rai (Sampang), has fielded Krishna Atal from Morang–4. Atal is known as an anti-corruption activist.

Meanwhile, the Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party, led by Baburam Bhattarai and Janardan Sharma, has included Biratnagar-based industrialist Rakesh Surana in its proportional representation list.

Surana is the immediate past president of the Chamber of Industries Morang. The party said he has been placed fifth on the proportional list under the Madhesi quota, citing the need to bring private-sector energy expertise into state leadership.
