The Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party (PLP) has entered into an electoral alliance with the CPN-UML for the March 5 elections in eight districts of Karnali Province and four districts of Lumbini Province.
The PLP was formed in November 2025 through the merger of a Janardan Sharma-led faction of the then CPN (Maoist Centre) and the Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti). Former Maoist ideologue Baburam Bhattarai is the patron of the new party.
Under the agreement, the CPN-UML will support PLP candidates Janardan Sharma in Rukum West and Sandeep Pun in Rukum East.
Pun is contesting against Pushpa Kamal Dahal, coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party formed through the merger of several communist groups, in Rukum East.
In return, the PLP will back CPN-UML candidates in all Karnali districts except Humla and Jumla. The party will also support UML candidates in districts of the former Rapti Zone, which included Dang, Pyuthan, Rolpa, Rukum and Salyan.
Following the adoption of the federal system, Karnali Province came to include Salyan, Surkhet, Rukum West, Jajarkot, Dailekh, Dolpa, Kalikot, Mugu, Humla and Jumla. Rukum was divided into Rukum East, which falls under Lumbini Province, and Rukum West, which falls in Karnali.
Both parties have agreed to direct their party organisations and cadres to fully implement the electoral arrangement, according to the agreement letter dated January 24 and signed by CPN-UML Vice Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa and PLP presidium member Durga Sob.
