Nagarik Unmukti Party, Nepal leader Resham Chaudhary on Friday, January 23, filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s decision to cancel his candidacy from Kailali-1 for the March 5 House of Representatives election under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system.

Claiming that the election officer unlawfully rejected his nomination, Chaudhary has sought the annulment of the decision and an interim order to reinstate his candidacy.

The petition was registered on Friday. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sunday.

On Thursday, the Election Commission’s office in the constituency cancelled Chaudhary’s candidacy, stating that although he was granted a presidential pardon after being sentenced to life imprisonment in the Tikapur killings case, records of the offence and imprisonment still remain.
