Amid a wave of resignations among ministers and local government heads aiming to contest the upcoming elections, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel stepped down on Monday, January 19.

The move comes a day before the scheduled filing of nominations for the House of Representatives election under the first-past-the-post system.

Kharel is reportedly preparing to contest from the Lalitpur-2 constituency under the banner of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).

Earlier on Monday, Bablu Gupta resigned as Minister for Youth and Sports to join the RSP and enter the electoral fray. On Sunday, January 18, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra (Balen) Shah and Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang also stepped down to contest in the elections.
