Six Injured Passengers Discharged After Buddha Air Incident in Bhadrapur

Seven people were injured after an ATR 72 aircraft overran the runway during landing, police said

Six of the seven people injured after a Buddha Air aircraft overran the runway while landing at Bhadrapur Airport in Jhapa district on Friday night, January 2, were discharged after receiving primary treatment, police said.

Six passengers and one crew member were injured in the incident. The 24-year-old co-pilot Sushant Shrestha, who sustained injuries to his head and face, remains under treatment at Om Sai Pathibhara Hospital in Bhadrapur, according to Rajan Limbu, Superintendent of Police at the Jhapa District Police Office.

The ATR 72 aircraft, operating on the Kathmandu–Bhadrapur route, overran the runway by around 300 metres on the eastern side while landing at 9:10 pm, reported the state-owned RSS news agency, citing SP Limbu. The aircraft had departed Kathmandu at 8:23 pm. There were 51 passengers, four crew members and one aircraft engineer on board.

Besides co-pilot Shrestha of Lalitpur-4, police identified other injured as Sabin Jogi, 40, of Bhadrapur-10; Presika Adhikari, 20, of Birtamod-7; Sumitra Jogi, 42, of Birtamod-1; Kamal Prasad Kutuwal, 28, of Damak-1; Muna Ghatani, 40, of Kathmandu-16; and Priya Ghatani, 16, also of Kathmandu-16.

All the injured were taken to Om Sai Pathibhara Hospital.

A video shared on Facebook by a user named Bandhu Karki showed security personnel and others checking inside and around the damaged aircraft to ensure no passenger was left behind.

“Thank god, nothing happened,” a person can be heard saying in the video, while others urge people to help passengers move safely through the area.
