The National Cooperatives Regulatory Authority (NCRA) has launched a software system to register cooperatives primarily engaged in savings and credit. The NCRA held a program on Wednesday to officially start cooperative registration through the automated online platform.
At the program, NCRA Chair Dr. Khagaraj Sharma said the system allows cooperatives to also become members of the Credit Information Center and facilitates inclusion in the Deposit and Credit Protection Fund.
Sharma highlighted the need to address money laundering and to bring cooperatives into a structured system. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in resolving the challenges facing the sector.
DB Basnet, vice president of the National Cooperative Federation, called for smooth management of the system and asked NCRA staff to support and coordinate with cooperative organizations in completing registration and documentation.
Deepak Thapa, treasurer of the Nepal Savings and Credit Central Cooperative Association, stressed that cooperatives need financial support and facilitation. He said the NCRA should act as a facilitator rather than a regulator.
Badri Guragain, CEO of the National Cooperatives Bank, expressed confidence that the new system would help manage data efficiently and tackle money laundering.
The government established the National Cooperatives Regulatory Authority in January 2025 to regulate, supervise, and monitor cooperatives operating in savings and credit across Nepal. -- RSS
