The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged the public to remain vigilant as fire-related incidents continue to surge across the country, causing increasing damage to life and property.

According to the Authority, fire accounted for the vast majority of disaster events recorded in November. On November 8, 15 of the 18 disaster incidents reported nationwide were fire-related. A day earlier, 15 of the 19 disaster incidents were also caused by fire.

Fires led to substantial damage to physical property in Makawanpur, Chitwan, Kaski and Kailali. Two people were injured in these incidents, and the estimated loss amounted to Rs 5.37 million.

NDRRMA stated that many of these fires resulted from public negligence, including carelessness while handling flames and electrical short circuits. The Authority noted that the lack of awareness and continued negligence have made fire incidents a frequent occurrence.

Emphasizing that simple precautions can prevent large-scale losses, the NDRRMA called on the public to take necessary safety measures when lighting fires or using flammable materials.

There has been a rise in fire incidents since the onset of dry season in October. -- RSS
