Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has warned teachers and staff of educational institutions to refrain from engaging in political activities or using schools and universities for partisan purposes.
In a statement issued on Sunday, November 9, Minister Pun said that while teachers have the right to form trade unions for collective representation and bargaining, such bodies must remain free from political party affiliation.
He stated that the ministry would not recognise any teachers’ unions linked to political parties.
The minister said he had received complaints indicating that some teachers, including university faculty, were involved in political activities in violation of the code of conduct. Such behaviour, he cautioned, undermines the integrity of the education system.
Minister Pun further warned that participation in political activities contrary to the code of conduct is punishable by law. He urged teachers’ unions, professional associations, and university staff organisations to maintain neutrality and prioritise educational improvement over political interests.
The circular also cautioned that any activities disrupting the academic environment of schools, colleges, or universities would lead to legal and administrative action.
