The Nepal Police has directed all subordinate offices across the country to remain on high alert for disaster preparedness after the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology issued a warning of heavy rainfall in various parts of the country starting Thursday afternoon.

According to Nepal Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General Binod Ghimire, all police units have been instructed to assess potential disaster risks in their respective areas and stay ready to respond in coordination with concerned agencies.

The Department stated that the current weather pattern is being influenced by the westerly winds, a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, and the partial effect of Cyclone Montha developed over the Bay of Bengal.

The cyclone, which made a landfall in India’s Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday night and gradually weakened while moving north and northwest, is now approaching Nepal’s central region as a low-pressure area. The system is expected to shift eastward, becoming more active from Thursday night and affecting weather conditions in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces until Saturday.

The Department has forecast moderate snowfall in many parts of the high-hill and mountain regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in some areas of Karnali Province and isolated locations elsewhere.

Heavy snowfall is likely in a few places of the high-hill and mountain regions of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, while heavy rainfall may occur in some areas of Koshi, Madhes, and Bagmati provinces.

The Department’s Spokesperson, Dinkar Kayastha, said the weather conditions could affect daily life, mountaineering, agriculture, and tourism activities, urging the public to exercise caution. The impact is expected to persist until Saturday.

Following the Department’s alert, both Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force have stepped up preparations, while the Madhes Province government has already decided to adopt a high level of precaution. – AFP/RSS
