The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has disconnected electricity supply to 18 additional industries for failing to clear dues for using dedicated feeder and trunk line connections. The latest disconnections, carried out from Friday night, follow an earlier move to cut power to six industries.

According to NEA spokesperson Rajan Dhakal, power was cut to Panchakanya Steel, Shyam Plastic, Goenka Foods, Cosmos Cement, SR Steel, Panchakanya Plastic, Bhalwari Automatic Factory, Jagdamba Synthetics, Everest Rolling Industries, Gharana Foods, Bishal Cement, Butwal Cement, Nigale Cement, SR Foods, Siddhartha PET Plast, Himal Iron, Triveni Synthetic Yarn, and Sona Minerals & Oils.

Earlier, the authority had disconnected power to Jagdamba Steel, Reliance Spinning Mills, Shivam Cement, Ghorahi Cement, Arghakhanchi Cement, and Triveni Spinning Mills.

Dhakal said the industries collectively owe more than Rs 8 billion. Some have started settling dues in installments, while others have sought legal recourse. “Fourteen industries using dedicated feeders and trunk lines have begun repayment in installments, while six have obtained interim court orders. Hetauda Cement and Udayapur Cement also have outstanding dues,” he told RSS.

The dispute over the charges has persisted since 2018. A study led by then NEA board member Bhakta Bahadur Pun first examined the issue of unpaid fees. The authority has since been trying to recover the dues, but industrialists argue they did not use dedicated or trunk lines and are therefore not liable to pay. The issue has reached the courts, the Federal Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, and the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

The NEA had issued a public notice on September 28, giving industries 21 days to clear their dues. Although installment payments were permitted, the authority said electricity was cut in line with the Electricity Revenue Collection Regulations, 2021, after the deadline expired without payment.
