The body of Bipin Joshi, the Nepali student who died in Hamas captivity following the militant group’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, was brought to Kathmandu on Monday afternoon, October 20, 2025.
Joshi had gone to Israel under the “Learn and Earn” programme. He and several other Nepali students were caught in the Hamas assault on southern Israel, which killed ten Nepali students and left Joshi missing.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on October 13 that Joshi was not among the hostages verified to be alive. The following day, Israeli authorities identified one of the four bodies returned by Hamas as his.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki paid tribute to the late Joshi at a ceremony held at Tribhuvan International Airport, offering condolences to his bereaved family.
Also present at the ceremony were Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, the Prime Minister’s Chief Adviser Ajay Bhadra Khanal, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, Communication and Information Technology Secretary Radhika Aryal, and Israeli Ambassador to Nepal Shmulik Arie Bass. They all expressed sympathy and paid their respects.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Joshi’s body was to be flown to Dhangadhi later in the day and taken to his home in Kanchanpur.
