The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has announced that the monsoon has begun to withdraw from Nepal starting Monday, October 6.
According to the Department, the monsoon has already retreated from Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces, as well as most of the western parts of Lumbini Province. A few parts of Gandaki Province have also seen the monsoon’s departure.
In its bulletin issued on Monday, the department said that monsoon winds have been gradually weakening and are expected to withdraw completely from the remaining parts of the country over the next few days. It also stated that the withdrawal began four days later than the usual date of October 2.
Although the monsoon is retreating, the Department has cautioned that residual weather systems could still trigger light rainfall or adverse weather conditions in some areas. It has advised the public to remain alert to possible short-term weather disturbances.
Meanwhile, in an earlier bulletin, the department had clarified that the weather system that caused widespread rainfall on October 3 and 4 has already exited Nepal. The adverse weather caused torrential downpour resulting in the loss of 60 lives, including 37 people due to landslides triggered by rainfall in Ilam district.
