Hindus across Nepal are observing Kojagrat Purnima today, marking the final day of the 15-day Bada Dashain festival by worshipping Goddess Mahalaxmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.
The festival formally concludes with devotees offering prayers to Mahalaxmi at their homes in the evening and keeping vigil throughout the night. According to religious belief, the goddess is said to travel the world on this night to see who remains awake, blessing those found observing the vigil with prosperity and good fortune.
The day also marks the end of the Tika and Jamara exchange ritual. As per tradition, the Jamara sprouted on Ghatasthapana at Dashainghar is ceremonially disposed of in ponds, rivers, and other sacred sites on this day.
This year’s Dashain, the biggest festival of Nepal, was dampened by heavy rainfall that caused widespread damage and loss of at least 44 lives, mostly in eastern and central Nepal. – With inputs from RSS
