Aryatara Shakya has been enthroned as the new Kumari, or the ‘living goddess,’ at the Kumarighar in Basantapur, continuing a centuries-old tradition.

In Nepali culture, the Kumari is revered as the embodiment of Goddess Taleju Bhawani (also known as Tulaja Bhawani) and is selected from among pre-pubertal girls. The tradition is believed to have been initiated by King Jaya Prakash Malla of Kathmandu.

Aryatara, one and a half years old and a resident of Itumbahal, was anointed amidst special rituals accompanied by traditional music. With her enthronement, she assumes her religious and cultural duties as the new Kumari, participating in various ceremonies including Indra Jatra and Nawaratri. She will also grant audiences to the public at designated times.

Gautam Shakya, coordinator of the Kumarighar Management Committee, said the Kumari is provided with food, accommodation, and other services at the Kumarighar in accordance with tradition. The Head of State is also expected to visit her on the night of Kojagrat Purnima, the final day of the Dashain festival.

Aryatara was chosen after consultations with the Guthi, the Panchanga (Calendar) Determination Committee, and other stakeholders involved in the Kumari selection process.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Kumari, Trishna Shakya, was bid farewell with special ceremonies and worship. -- RSS
