Newly appointed Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has clarified that the interim government has no plans to impose restrictions on any political parties.

The remarks come amid heightened discontent with political parties among youths, whose protests last week led to the toppling of the KP Sharma Oli government.

Addressing the situation following the recent protests and civil unrest, Aryal said the government will create conditions for the return of political leaders ousted by last week’s demonstrations. He also emphasised that the support of groups that gained influence during the unrest must be validated through the electoral process.

Aryal added that special measures will be taken to ensure the upcoming elections–called for March 5, 2026–are free and fair, expressing confidence that under Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s leadership, the integrity of the electoral process will be safeguarded.

In the meantime, the government has decided to observe a day of mourning in memory of citizens who lost their lives during the recent events. Aryal said the identification of the deceased is ongoing. Of the 20 bodies at Teaching Hospital, 12 have been handed over to families following post-mortem examinations, while the remaining eight are still being identified and may take some time.

He further stated that the government has declared the deceased as martyrs and will conduct their funerals with state honours. The Cabinet is also preparing to decide on compensation and relief packages for the victims’ families.

Earlier in the day, advocate Om Prakash Aryal, regarded a close ally of Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, was sworn in as Minister for Law and Home Affairs.
