President Ramchandra Paudel on Friday, September 12, dissolved the House of Representatives, the lower house of Nepal’s Federal Parliament, effective 11 PM, and announced fresh elections for Thursday, March 5, 2026.
The dissolution came on the recommendation of newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who assumed office the same evening as a caretaker PM. Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, has been entrusted with steering the country through a fragile transitional period marked by political uncertainty and youth-led protests that culminated in the ouster of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Tuesday.
India Welcomes Formation of Interim Government
India was quick to welcome the development. In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi expressed optimism that the Interim Government under Karki’s leadership would help foster peace and stability in Nepal.
“As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy, and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” the statement read.
