Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has summoned an all-party meeting at 6 PM Tuesday as nationwide demonstrations intensify following Monday’s brutal crackdown on anti-corruption protests.
Issuing a note, the prime minister appealed for restraint during the difficult period and expressed deep sadness over the aftermath of the protests in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. He said he was consulting with all concerned parties to assess the situation and reach a resolution.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it was closely monitoring developments in Nepal.
“\[We] are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives,” the MEA said in a statement issued Tuesday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery for those who were injured.”
As a close friend and neighbour, India added, it hopes that all parties will exercise restraint and resolve issues through peaceful dialogue. The statement also noted curfews imposed in Kathmandu and several other Nepali cities, advising Indian nationals in Nepal to exercise caution and follow local guidelines.
Despite the crackdown, anger over Monday’s Gen-Z-led protests continues to fuel demonstrations across the country. Protesters are openly defying curfews and prohibitory orders issued by district administrations.
Photos and videos circulating on social media show acts of arson and vandalism, with demonstrators targeting government buildings and properties of political parties, particularly those associated with Prime Minister Oli’s CPN-UML.
