The Government of Nepal collected Rs 638 million in mountaineering revenue from expeditions during the spring climbing season of Fiscal Year 2025/26.
According to the Department of Tourism, the season, which ran from March 1 to April 21, saw a rise in the number of climbers attempting major peaks.
A total of 869 mountaineers — 678 men and 191 women, both Nepalis and foreigners — successfully scaled 23 mountains and peaks during this period.
Among them, 41 climbers, including 26 men and 15 women, reached the summit of Mt Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters), the world’s third-highest mountain located in Taplejung, generating Rs 10.97 million in royalties. Similarly, 66 climbers summited Mt Makalu in Sankhuwasabha, contributing Rs 16.26 million in revenue.
The bulk of the earnings came from Mt Everest (Sagarmatha), where 374 climbers — 302 men and 72 women — reached the top, bringing in Rs 554 million in royalties.
The Department of Tourism stated that the continued increase in climbers has significantly boosted mountaineering revenue during the spring season. -- RSS
