FMTC, STC to Open Fair Price Shops from September 15

To provide discounts on staples ahead of Dashain and Tihar

The government will open fair-price shops from September 15, targeting the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals.

Ghatasthapana, the first day of Dashain, falls on Monday, September 22 this year.

The Food Management and Trading Company (FMTC) and the Salt Trading Corporation (STC) will run the subsidised shops to benefit consumers.

Shivram Pokhrel, Head of the Supply Chain and Consumer Interest Protection Division at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, said a circular had been issued to both FMTCL and STC for the implementation of the fair-price shops.

Operating such shops in 46 districts, FMTC will offer a discount of Rs 5 per kilogram on rice, lentils, wheat, sugar, and other essential goods, according to the state-owned RSS news agency.

STC will run 15 outlets in the Kathmandu Valley, including three mobile shops, providing a discount of Rs 2 per kilogram on salt, Rs 5 per kilogram on sugar, Rs 7 per litre on cooking oil, and Rs 7 per kilogram on beaten rice, pulses, flour, and maize.
