Swollen Kabeli Sweeps Away Hydropower Machinery in Taplejung

Heavy rains, landslide destroy crops

Two excavators and two tippers belonging to the Sinam Power House of the Upper Kabeli Hydropower Project in Taplegunj were swept away by the swollen Kabeli River Sunday night, following heavy rain.

The excavators were later found partially submerged about 20 metres downstream from the powerhouse, but the tippers remain missing, said Inspector Bibek Basnet, Information Officer at the District Police Office, Taplejung.

Meanwhile, a rain-induced landslide in Sirijangha Rural Municipality-5 displaced one family in Pedang and put five other houses at risk, according to a local leader. Another slide damaged the school ground of Mahendra Basic School in Ward 7.

Locals said crops in several areas have also been destroyed by the landslides.
