BYD, Foton, MG Introduce Fresh Models

A futuristic electric hatchback, a rugged diesel pickup and a spacious India-made EV target diverse consumers ahead of the festive season and auto expos.

The Nepali automobile market was abuzz with fresh energy this June and July, as three standout models made their debut, each targeting a different segment. From eco-conscious city drivers to off-road adventurers and families seeking practical luxury, the launches included the 2025 BYD Dolphin EV, the rugged Foton Tunland G7 and the spacious MG Windsor EV.

Despite their diverse appeal, all three vehicles share a common thread—Chinese ownership and global ambitions. Their arrival also sets the stage for a dynamic festival season and the upcoming auto expos.

These launches also reflect a broader trend: Chinese automotive brands, through local distributors, are gaining ground in Nepal, especially as EV adoption accelerates and utility vehicles remain indispensable.

BYD Dolphin 2025: Futuristic, Functional and Forward-Looking

On June 22, Cimex Inc Pvt Ltd, the authorized distributor of BYD in Nepal, unveiled the 2025 edition of its popular hatchback Dolphin EV. While design changes are subtle, the upgrades are significant, most notably the switch to a 12V Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) auxiliary battery, replacing the traditional lead-acid unit. Lighter, safer and more durable, the LFP unit comes with a six-year or 150,000-kilometer warranty.

The Dolphin features a 70 kW motor and 44.9 kWh Blade Battery, offering a range of 340 km (WLTP) and supporting DC fast charging that can top up 80% in just 30 minutes.

Interior upgrades include a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen, NFC-enabled keyless entry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and expanded boot space of up to 1,310 liters. The electric hatchback with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating is equipped with six airbags and a full suite of ADAS features.

The car is priced at Rs 4.115 million.

Samir Shrestha, Chief Marketing Officer at Cimex Inc, told New Business Age that the market response for the new Dolphin has been strong. “The reception has been very positive and aligned with our expectations. Since the launch, we have sold approximately 100 units and bookings have far exceeded that,” he added.

Foton Tunland G7: Muscle for the Mountains

Also launched on June 22, the Foton Tunland G7 is a diesel pickup truck built for Nepal’s toughest roads. Distributed by MAW Vriddhi, the G7 runs on a 1.9-liter turbo diesel engine delivering 160 hp and 390 Nm of torque.

With a ground clearance of 225 mm, near one-ton payload capacity and proven performance in high-altitude tests, the G7 is built for durability. Available in 4x2 and 4x4 manual variants, it offers cooled front seats, a sunroof, leather upholstery and six airbags - a segment-first feature. Safety is further enhanced with ABS, EBD, and rear parking sensors.

Pricing ranges from Rs 5.19 million for the Elite variant to Rs 7.49 million for the Flagship variant.

Prakash Subedi, Head of Marketing at MAW Vriddhi, told New Business Age that interest in the pickup has exceeded expectations. “We have already sold 17 units since the launch,” he added.

MG Windsor EV: Spacious, Smart and Made in India

Paramount Motors launched the MG Windsor EV, a five-seater electric vehicle produced in India by SAIC-owned MG Motors, in Kathmandu on July 2. It features a 38 kWh battery paired with a 100 kW motor, delivering up to 332 km of range. It comes with four driving modes—Eco, Eco+, Normal and Sport.

The Windsor comes loaded with premium features, such as 135-degree reclining aero lounge seats, a 604-liter boot, 15.6-inch Grandview touchscreen, wireless charging, 360-degree camera and smart flush door handles. Safety features include six airbags and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.

Priced at Rs 3.799 million for Excite variant and Rs 3.999 million for Exclusive variant, the Windsor strengthens MG’s urban EV lineup in Nepal. According to the company, early bookings have been strong mainly due to India-based manufacturing, which ensures better spare parts availability, and an eight-year warranty on key components.

Sandeep Chhetri, Marketing Head at Paramount Motors, described the early feedback for the Windsor as very promising. “While exact sales data will take time to emerge, bookings have been impressive and sales encouraging,” he added.
