The local community stakeholders of Kanchanjunga are set to organize the Kanchanjunga Platinum Jubilee-2082 in Taplejung district to commemorate the first successful expedition to Mt. Kanchanjunga. The celebration will take place from April 18 to 20 at Lelep of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality-5.

The organizers unveiled the event's logo and slogan on Monday. Tshewang Sherpa, treasurer of the Kanchanjunga Conservation Area Management Council and the coordinator of the Festival Coordination Committee, stated that the event aims to promote natural heritage conservation and boost tourism. The festival will be held in collaboration with various organizations, with ongoing discussions for financial support from the Koshi Province Government, according to Council Member-Secretary Man Kumar Rai.

The celebration will feature promotion of trekking route, cultural programs, local product showcases, and traditional cuisine exhibitions. Organizers plan to invite the families of the first expedition team members and other summiteers to honor their historic achievements.

Following the main event in Lelep, a national-level special celebration will take place in Kathmandu.

Standing at 8,586 meters, Mt. Kanchanjunga is the world’s third tallest peak and Nepal’s second highest. British climbers George Band and Joe Brown made history by reaching the summit on May 25, 1955. -- RSS
