A twin-seater Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed Thursday while on a routine training sortie in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said. Both pilot and co-pilot ejected safely before it crashed in an agricultural field.

The aircraft crashed near Sunari Chowki in Shivpuri district, about 384 km north of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

Local media reports said the pilots have suffered injuries.

Television images showed the jet in flames and columns of thick black smoke going up in the sky.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown. The IAF has initiated an inquiry to determine the factors that led to the incident. – Xinhua/RSS
