Representatives of Nepal and South Africa discussed enhancing cooperation in the tourism and service sectors, among other areas of mutual interest.
The two sides discussed the issue during a meeting between Chandra Prasad Dhakal, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), and Professor Anil Shukla, South Africa's High Commissioner to India and concurrently Ambassador to Nepal, reads a statement issued by FNCCI.
During the meeting, President Dhakal highlighted the strong potential for South African investors in Nepal, particularly in the development of tourism infrastructure. He urged Ambassador Shukla to help promote investment from South African businesses in Nepal.
Although current trade between the two countries remains limited, Dhakal emphasized the opportunity to expand bilateral trade relations. He pointed out that Nepal offers attractive investment opportunities in sectors such as agro-processing, hydropower, infrastructure, and information technology. He also noted that tourism is one of Nepal’s most naturally endowed sectors, the statement added.
Ambassador Shukla expressed his commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties between South Africa and Nepal. He underscored the significant potential for collaboration in the tourism sector.
“Tourism is an area where South Africa and Nepal can achieve remarkable outcomes through cooperation. Just as South Africa is known for wildlife tourism, Nepal's unique landscape, biodiversity, and cultural heritage make it an equally distinctive destination. We must work together to promote tourism in both countries,” FNCCI quoted Shukla as saying.
Currently, Nepal imports grain, fruits, beverages, and machinery from South Africa, while its exports to South Africa include carpets, ready-made garments, and iron products.
Both sides expressed confidence that the meeting would help make Nepal–South Africa relations more effective and result-oriented.
