The seventh batch of Nepali tourism professionals has begun learning Chinese as part of an initiative aimed at improving communication with Chinese visitors.
The latest training began Friday, June 6, at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) auditorium, in a ceremony inaugurated by Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Pandey.
Speaking at the event, Minister Pandey underscored the importance of language skills in fostering international ties and enhancing tourism services. “Language proficiency plays a vital role in building closeness and mutual understanding,” he said. “Knowledge of the Chinese language will act as a bridge between Nepal and China.”
The initiative is jointly organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, who has participated in the initiative multiple times since his arrival, highlighted the value of Chinese language training for Nepali tourism professionals. “Chinese tourists often expect to communicate in their native language,” he said. “This program presents a golden opportunity to connect with the world’s largest tourism market.”
Since its launch nearly a decade ago—following an agreement made during then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to China—the initiative has already trained 240 individuals in Chinese language skills.
The training aims not only to enhance service delivery but also to strengthen Nepal-China cultural ties and broaden employment opportunities in Nepal's tourism sector.
