Gwarko Flyover, a major infrastructure project expected to ease traffic congestion at one of the busiest intersections along the Kathmandu Ring Road, would be operational in a few days, according to Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal.
On Saturday, Minister Dahal, accompanied by senior officials from the Department of Roads (DoR), conducted an on-site inspection of the flyover. Speaking during the visit, Minister Dahal acknowledged delays but noted that the project represents a significant new undertaking for Nepal’s road infrastructure development.
Dr. Bijaya Jaishi, Director General of the Department of Roads, confirmed that the primary structural works are now complete. “The flyover will be operational within a few days,” he said.
According to Deep Barahi, chief of the Quality Research and Development Centre under the DoR, minor finishing works—including the installation of a median divider—are still pending but will be completed within the next two to three days.
Originally contracted in February 2022 under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, the Rs 170.688 million project was awarded to Ashish Samanantar Religare JV. Although the contract was signed early, actual construction only commenced in February 2023—delaying the project by nearly a year from the start.
The four-lane, single-span flyover features a 320-meter ramp on the Balkumari side and a 185-meter ramp near B&B Hospital, with a central bridge span of 35 meters. It maintains a vertical clearance of six meters to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement beneath.
The initial completion deadline was February 2024, but multiple delays—including a technical issue in March this year caused by ground subsidence and joint displacement—forced repeated extensions.
