When the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) results were announced last Friday, Goma Shrestha had just returned from helping transplant paddy at a neighbour’s farm. Moments later, she learned she had scored a perfect 4.0 GPA.
A student of Mahendra Gram Secondary School in Sudal, Changunarayan Municipality–8, Bhaktapur, Goma's achievement is remarkable—not just for the score, but for the journey behind it.
Originally from Khaniyapani in Ramechhap, Goma moved to Bhaktapur with her parents when she was four years old. Her father, Meen Bahadur, found work at a brick kiln located near the school where Goma would later study.
The family's financial struggles meant Goma had to help out from an early age. Until Grade 9, she spent her mornings helping her parents lay bricks. Only in Grade 10 did they ask her to focus solely on her studies.
“That shift in routine gave me more time to study,” Goma said.
Her goal is now clear: she wants to become a doctor. Goma hopes to pursue higher secondary education in the Science stream and secure a scholarship to study MBBS.
“They say it takes a lot of hard work, but I’m ready for it,” she said, with quiet determination.
