Sanima Group comprises companies which are operational in Nepal and other countries of the world. These companies are run by prominent non-resident Nepalis (NRNs) residing in different parts of the globe. The group has major investment in hydropower and banking sector while its portfolio also expands to the insurance, health and media and communication sectors.  The seeds of Sanima Group of Companies were sowed in the former Soviet Russia when Ojha, Niroula and Lamichhane joined hands to start a business. The three men had gone to Russia in the 1980s to pursue their higher studies. They were also engaged in business activities apart from studies. Arun Ojha and Tek Raj Niraula used to run an electrical business in Moscow while Lamichhane who migrated to Russia in 1986 worked as a dealer for Sony, LG and Samsung brands in Russia during his initial days as a businessman. The trio combined their businesses and academic expertise and turned into millionaires with business setups in foreign land.

In 1999, they founded the Sanima Hydropower Limited in Nepal, the first company of the Sanima Group, that constructed the 2.6 MW Sunkoshi Small Hydropower Project. Their investment efforts were complimented by Belarus-Russian entrepreneurs including Dr Upendra Mahato, Khem Lamichhane, Binaya Kumar Shrestha, Dr Niraj Govind Shrestha, Olga Ojha, Ram Krishna Shah and Ghanashyam Thapa. Afterwards, the group formed Sanima Hydro, a group of private and public companies with investments from NRNs. After the successful implementation of the Sunkoshi Small Hydropower Project, the group established multiple special purpose vehicles and invested in multiple hydropower projects with a total generation capacity of over 100 MW.
