New York Street Named after Tenzing Norgay

May 30: New York’s 75th Street, Broad Way and Woodside in Queens Borough, has been named after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first man to set foot at the world's highest mountain – Mt Everest (Sagarmatha).
The City Council of District 25 of Queens, New York endorsed last April for naming the road after Sherpa in response to the proposal by the United Sherpa Kidung and the USA Nepal Climbers Association. The campaign to name the street in honour of Sherpa was being carried out since the past six years.
President of the Climbers Association, Pasang Nima Sherpa said the road after Tenzing Sherpa has been named on the Everest Day, “which is a matter of pride for all of us”.
Earlier, the first South Asian Congresswoman Jennifer Rajkumar had succeeded in getting May 29 recognized as Mount Everest Day by getting a resolution passed on the same issue.  –- RSS
