Suspended UML Secretary Arrested in Fake Bhutanese Refugee Scam

May 15: Former Deputy Prime Minister and suspended secretary of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, was arrested. He had been on the run for 12 days before being caught.

He was held from the Budhanilkantha area of Kathmandu for his alleged role in a fraud of millions of rupees by duping Nepali citizens with the promises of sending them to the United States in the cover of Bhutanese refugees on Sunday evening, according to sources from the Home Ministry.

An arrest warrant was issued against Rayamajhi by the Kathmandu District Court on May 3 in connection with the case. He had been absconding since then.

The Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) had suspended him from all party responsibilities shortly after his disappearance.

Rayamajhi's arrest marks yet another high-profile development in the ongoing investigation into the scam. Earlier, Indrajit Rai, the advisor to former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, was arrested on charges of his involvement in the scam.

The investigation is being closely monitored by the authorities, and the police have already made 13 arrests over their alleged connections to the scam.
