Local Election Kicks off in 753 Local Units

May 13: The local election is being held in all 753 local units across the country today.

The Election Commission has assured to conduct the poll in a fair, free and impartial manner.

Organising a press conference on the eve of the election, the EC said more than 17.73 million eligible voters are expected to participate in the election to choose a total of 35,221 people's representatives at local levels.

Voting is underway from 7 am this morning till 5 pm, a polling officer informed New Business Age.

Among the candidates, 355 contesting for different positions from various political parties and 35 independent candidates have been unanimously elected, the state-owned national news agency said citing the EC.    
According to the RSS, there are a total of 10,756 polling stations and 21,955 centers across the country.    
Altogether, 109,088 employees and 65,865 volunteers deployed for the election have reached their workplace along with required materials.    
Of the total 79 political parties registered with the EC for the poll, 65 will be contesting in the local election. A total of 145,011 candidates from various political parties and independent ones are competing during the poll.
