DoTM to Resume Printing Drivers’ License Cards in One and a Half Months

October 19: Printing of driver's license card, which had been halted for a long time due to technical problem, is expected to resume within a month and a half. The cards could not be printed for a long time since the card did not fit in the mass printer.

The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) said that the printing of driving license had been halted as the mass printer was purchased from one company and the card was purchased from another company. Director General Namaraj Ghimire said that they are ready to bring the card as it is now compatible with the mass printers. "We are in the process of bringing the card," he said.

DoTM informed that 1.4 million cards will be brought in the first phase and the problem of distributing license will be solved immediately. Ghimire assured that care will be taken not to repeat the same mistakes in the coming days. He also said considering the technical problems faced now, all the aspects would be taken into consideration when signing contracts in the future.

The “smart' driver's license”, which was introduced for the convenience of the service seekers, is not working as expected. Due to various problems, the service seekers are not able to get the license on time.

Previously, due to the limited capacity of the equipment, the service seekers could not get the license on time. Two years ago, the department had bought a mass printer with large capacity and one million cards from the same company. DoTM has only one or two thousand cards remaining. Due to the scarcity of cards, the department is printing licenses only for those who are in dire need. Transportation offices have started issuing temporary driver's licenses for one year because of the shortage of printing cards.
