Government Extends Lockdown by 10 days

April 26: The government has decided to extend the lockdown by ten days until May 7.

A cabinet meeting took a decision to this effect on Sunday (April 26).

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, government spokesperson Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada informed that the lockdown has been “extended until midnight of May 7 to minimize the risk of coronavirus infection”.

The government had imposed the lockdown for the first time on March 24 after a case of coronavirus was reported in the country. So far, Nepal has confirmed 51 cases of coronavirus.

Khatiwada, who also holds the portfolio of finance as well as communication minister, added that the cabinet  has decided to close the international borders of Nepal until May 13.

According to Minister Khatiwada, the decision to restrict cross-border movement was taken considering the high risk of spreading coronavirus from people coming to Nepal from countries already reeling under the effect of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Council of Ministers also decided to allow migrant workers to join work in South Korea under the EPS agreement. He said workers can now start jobs in South Korea as per the mutual understanding reached between the two countries.
