June 22: Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) has been declared as the best management college of the country during the fifth NewBiz Business Schools Conclave and Awards held in the capital on Friday, June 21.
The organiser New Business Age Pvt Ltd also honoured 13 best management colleges of the country in recognition of their academic excellence in their respective categories during the awards ceremony.
The winners’ list includes one best college from each of the seven provinces (except Kathmandu Valley) and the top colleges in six other categories namely MBA, MBS, BBA, BBS, hotel management and public college.
Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) also succeeded in winning the titles of the Best MBA College as well as the Best BBA College.
Likewise, Aadikavi Bhanu Bhakta College was declared the Best MBS College of Nepal out of the total 1834 colleges across the country. Similarly, DAV College (Best BBS College), Asian Institute of College and Managament (Best Hotel Management College) and Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (Best Public College) won the awards in their respective categories.
Among the provinces, the titles of the best college in each province were awarded to Aastha College of Province 1, Birgunj Public College of Province 2, Presidency College of Management Sciences of Province 3 (out of Kathmandu Valley), LA Grandee International College of Gandaki Province, Tilottama Campus of Province 5, Midwestern University School of Management (MUSOM) of Karnali Province, and Kailali Multiple Campus of Sudur Paschhim Province.
During the event, the winning colleges expressed their happiness regarding the fairness of the jury in the selection process.
Madan Lamsal, chairman and the editor-in-chief of New Business Age and Arthik Abhiyan National Daily said, “This award is organised not only for rewarding management colleges for their excellence but also for their contribution to the education sector and to encourage the colleges to improve their quality."
Besides the awards, a panel discussion on management education was also held during the event.
Hem Raj Dhakal, co-founder and managing director of IME Group; Ashish Tiwari, principal director at Ace Institute of Management; and Bimala Rai Paudyal, member of National Assembly discussed about the overall situation of Nepal’s education system compared to the global education trend and also suggested for improving education quality here. The session was moderated by the chairman and CEO of Business Oxygen Pvt Ltd, Siddhant Raj Pandey.
During the panel discussion, Dhakal shared that only 20 percent of the university graduates in Nepal are ready for the market after their graduation while 80 percent graduates need further training for making them ready for job.
Paudyal highlighted on the scope of management education beyond the banking and financial sectors. She said, “The government seems to recruit graduates from technical background even for its non-technical or managerial position. Management programmes are designed not only for banking and financial institutions but also for the bureaucracy.” She further added that the Prime Minister Agriculture Programme could be effective if it is driven by graduates from the management background.
Paudyal also discussed about the perception of Nepalis on higher education and how it has been changing gradually with time. “Daughters were expected to opt for nursing and sons for commerce in the early days in our society. Now, it has been changed,” said Paudyal.
During the programme, Khaga Raj Baral, secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology revealed the bitter truth of brain drain of capable educated youths of Nepal.
“Around 60,000 no objection certificates (NOC) are issued in a year for students,” said Baral.
Representatives from different colleges, business houses and educational institutes participated in the awards ceremony sponsored by Everest Bank. This is fifth edition of the event which was co-sponsored by Prabhu Bank, Laxmi Bank and NMB Bank. Likewise the event was supported by NLG Insurance, Surya Life, Vibor Capital Ltd, Insurance Board and Saujanya Media as media partner.
