Govt Mulls Increasing Import Tax on Bananas

November 20: The government of Nepal is planning to increase import tax on bananas. Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Chakra Pani Khanal, shared that the government has been working to increase import tax on bananas in order to discourage the import of bananas from India.

According to Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), the national news agency of Nepal, the minister said that the rate and ratio of increasing the tax was under discussion with the Ministry of Finance.

The government has been collecting five percent tax while importing bananas while the banana farmers have been demanding up to 30 percent tax.

The farmers and entrepreneurs have claimed that they will not be able to continue banana farming if the import tax is not increased, according to RSS.
