February 10 : The Central Bureau of Statistics is preparing to carry out a Comprehensive Data Collection to revise the National Income Accounts. Deputy Director General of the bureau Dr. Rudra Suwal said that the effort was aimed at determining the size, nature and structure of the national economy. He added that in this process data will be collected also of the sectors that are still not included in the calculation of Gross Domestic Product. He said that it will include all the transactions, whether small or big.

Dr. Suwal said the overall objective of this effort is to prepare a ‘benchmark’ for the national accounts. He said that determining the country’s actual economic status was indeed a basis of the national development. Deputy Director Suwal said the assessment would also help reveal the standing of each kind of business in the country’s economy.

The Bureau is of the view that such an assessment was necessary, since the current practice is dominated by the manufacturing sector. Suwal said that the bureau has come up with the plan also to remove the doubts about the current practice of national income accounting.
