GEFONT to Initiate Campaign Against Exploitation of Interns

July 22: The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) is preparing to launch a campaign against the exploitation of workers in the name of internship (training).

This is one of the main campaigns that GEFONT will conduct after its 8th National Congress. GEFONT believes that this will put an end to the exploitation in the labor market.

GEFONT held a press conference on Thursday to inform about the preparations for the 8th National Congress to be held from July 23 to 26.

During the press meet, GEFONT Chairman Binod Shrestha said that not only are interns employed without money, but in some establishments they are charged fees, this trend is serious labor exploitation.

He shared that GEFONT will be starting the campaign with the concept that interns should also be remunerated.

Similarly, since there is no data on how many workers there are in Nepal, GEFONT will also conduct a campaign to list the workers at the local level. For this, GEFONT said that at least three of its leaders will be mobilized in every municipality. GEFONT has planned to register workers at the local level through them.

“For this, the leaders of GEFONT will be mobilized in all 753 municipalities of the country,” said Shrestha.
