Parliamentary Probe Committee gets Seven More Days to Prepare its Report

July 22: The House of Representatives (HoR) has extended the deadline of a special probe committee to investigate into the issues related to budget by a week.

Initially, the committee was given 10 days to prepare a report after investigating into the matter related to the entry of unauthorized persons into the Finance Ministry on the eve of budget announcement on May 28. The then Finance Minister Janardan Sharma has been accused of allowing the unauthorized persons to enter the ministry allegedly to influence the tax rate in favour of certain business groups.

A meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Thursday unanimously passed a motion to extend the committee's timeframe for one more week, the state-owned national news agency RSS reported.  Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota had tabled a proposal for the deadline extension of the committee as per the Rule 166 of the HoR Regulations-2075.

The 11-member parliamentary probe committee is struggling to prepare its report on time due to non-cooperation from finance ministry officials. The ministry has also failed to submit CCTV footage of the incident stating that it cannot store the videos for more than 13 days.
