Nepal’s Coffee Export Increases by 66 Percent

November 17: Nepal's coffee export increased by 66 percent during the last fiscal year.

According to the Department of Customs, Nepal exported coffee worth Rs 57.7 million in the fiscal year 2019/20 which increased to Rs 96 million in the last fiscal year (FY 2020/21).

Quantity-wise, Nepal exported 46.89 metric tons of coffee in FY 2019/20 and 72.48 metric tons of coffee in FY 2020/21, according to the data provided by the department.

According to stakeholders, the demand for coffee produced in Nepal is increasing day by day as the product has been able to establish its name in the international market.

Out of the total coffee produced in Nepal, around 25 percent is exported to foreign countries.

Organising a press conference in Kirtipur on the eve of the 17th Coffee Day on Tuesday, Executive Director of the National Tea and Coffee Development Board Dr Bishnu Prasad Bhattarai informed that the export of coffee from Nepal remained encouraging during the time of Covid-19 crisis.

He stated that the production of coffee could play an important role for the nation’s prosperity. According to the board, the authentic taste and quality of coffee produced in Nepal have enabled the products to be sold at high price in the international market.

The board also unveiled plans to announce programmes to attract youths towards coffee farming. Executive Director Bhattarai informed that the programme will be launched in the upcoming fiscal year to give employment opportunities to youth as well as to contribute to the country's prosperity.

The board further informed that it has already prepared plans to develop pocket areas of coffee farms into coffee estates.

The board also fixed the minimum support price of coffee for farmers effective from  November 17 on the occasion of the 17th Coffee Day. According to the board, the minimum support price of coffee was determined by taking into consideration the suggestions provided by stakeholders and the cost incurred by the farmers.

As per the price list unveiled by the board, the support price of Fresh Cherry Grade A Coffee has been fixed at Rs 90 per kg. According to Executive Director Bhattarai, the price of Grade B coffee has been fixed at Rs 80 per kg.

Similarly, the price of Parchment Grade A Coffee has been fixed at Rs 450 per kg while that of Grade B has been fixed at Rs 397 per kg.

Likewise, the price of Dry Cherry Grade A Coffee has been fixed at Rs 148 per kg and the price of Grade B of the same category of coffee is Rs 95 per kg.
