Government Seeks Applications to Provide Relief to Poor Families

November 12: Government of Nepal has called for applications from eligible families seeking relief in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic. It may be noted that the government had announced relief for 500,000 households that have been identified as poor families.

The government had announced a relief of Rs 10,000 to each of the poor families that lost their source of income due to the pandemic.

The Ministry of Finance has requested the eligible families to submit applications in the prescribed format.

Workers and laborers of the informal sector, street vendors, rickshaw pullers, daily-wage  laborers, workers in public transportation, tourist porters who have now completely lost their job and have not been able to get any other employment, and those families who are facing financial crisis due to the death of the family’s bread winner  as well as the families looking after orphan children can apply for the relief package.

In order to receive the relief amount, the ministry has issued a notice stating that the  application to the ward office within 15 days.

The notice has also categorized the families that are ineligible for the cash relief provided by the government. According to the notice, the applicant will not get any relief if any member of the applicant family is earning through permanent, temporary or contract employment in government, private or any other organization or foreign employment, at the time of filing the application.

Similarly, if any member of the family is receiving social security allowance (senior citizen allowance, single woman allowance, Dalit or disabled allowance) from the Government of Nepal or pension from the Government of Nepal or from a fully or partially owned entity of the Government of Nepal or has been receiving a pension from a foreign government, such families will also not receive the grant amount.

Even those families who have been able to meet immediate expenditure needs from accumulated income or ancestral property, or have received cash once as relief for this purpose under the Prime Minister's Employment Program or Government of Nepal, State Government or local level programme will not get this facility.
