June 12: The government has started preparation for the fourth bilateral meeting with Chinese officials for extending the railway network from Kerung of Tibet to Kathmandu. The two sides have already prepared a feasibility report for the project.
Earlier, two meetings between Nepal and China were held in Kathmandu and one in China. The next meeting will be held in China but the date has not been fixed yet.
According to former secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Madhu Sudhan Adhikari, officials of the two countries had reached an understanding to prepare the feasibility report as well as technical report in the first three meetings. The earlier meetings had also agreed to set up railway along Kathmandu-Pokhara and Kathmandu-Lumbini routes.
As per the previous understanding, the feasibility report has been prepared while the authorities are preparing to finalize the technical report.
The upcoming meeting will dwell on the findings of the feasibility report, design of the railway, and other infrastructure, according to the Director General of the Department of Railways, Balaram Mishra.
